Celebrating Black Women in Leadership Focus of NCBA Luncheon

In September, the North Carolina Black Alliance hosted the second annual Black Women in Leadership Luncheon on the campus of Shaw University. The luncheon emphasized celebrating, commemorating, remembering, and exploring possibilities of Black women to leadership roles.

Anchoring the event, we reflected on the significant impact of Civil Rights icon and Shaw University alumna Ella Baker ‘1927, who played a crucial role in guiding and nurturing numerous rising leaders within the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Attendees celebrated the birthday of political trailblazer and former congresswoman, The Honorable Eva Clayton, and the successes of newly elected Congresswoman Valerie Foushee. Luncheon guests from various state organizations and civic groups shared how their leadership has been instrumental in driving progress that has created positive change in our communities.

In addition to a welcome by Congresswoman Foushee, guests were inspired by Ms.Tunya Smith, NC DOT Office of Civil Rights, Ms. Val Jordan, NC DOT Board Member, Division 5, and Mrs. Sonia M. Barnes, Black Women’s Empowerment Network. Members of the NC Black Alliance and Advance Carolina teams presented information that served as a call to more action in electoral politics, heightened efforts to defend our community from legislative onslaughts, and support for our beleaguered NC Black elected officials.

Overall, it was a great event that inspired and motivated us to make a positive difference in our communities.
