Promoting Lactation in Eastern North Carolina
On June 20-22, our Access to Healthcare team attended the Birth & Beyond Summit: Advancing Community-based Approaches to Birth Equity in College Park, Maryland. The team presented “Promoting Lactation in Eastern North Carolina,” which aims to address racial disparities in breastfeeding rates in Black communities in Eastern and rural North Carolina through increased representation of Black lactation counselors.
The pilot program currently has a cohort of 15 Black women training to become lactation counselors. The conference convened Black maternal health stakeholders from across the country to focus on activating the power that our communities already have to address racial disparities in maternal health.
